From the TLS‘s «Letters to the Editor» January 30, 2015:

Sir, -In his review of Frederick Wiseman’s documentary films National Gallery an At Berkeley (Arts, January 16), Toby Lichtig refers to «e.e. cummings». Surely this designation is antique. When Cummings published his «nonlectures» in 1965, there was a limited edition whicj he signed «E.E.Cummings». A few years later, when I was in the Army with time on my hands, I wrote to ask him about the discrepancy. He replied:

perhaps (who knows?) the journalistic «image» behind the lowercase-signature myth was of some publicitymad smartalec who used a smal «I» to call attention to himself

All the recent editions of his poetry I have seen use the upper and the lower case.

To readers, translators and admirers of his poetry, it’s your decision…
